This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts a domestic scene at Fuchu, one of the stations along the Tokaido road. Unlike the later, more famous series by Hiroshige, which focused on the geography and weather of the route, Hokusai’s earlier interpretation often centres on the human activity found within these locations. The composition shows two figures engaged in daily labour: a woman standing, holding a tray, and an older person seated, working with bundles of reeds or straw. The setting is sparse, defined by clean lines and a muted colour palette that reflects the traditional printing techniques of the Edo period.
Hokusai employs a delicate line quality to delineate the folds of the garments and the texture of the woven baskets.
