A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, depicting the kabuki actor Ōtani Hiroji III in a dynamic, expressive pose.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō captures the kabuki actor Ōtani Hiroji III in a dramatic pose. Bunchō was a master of the yakusha-e genre, which focused on depicting actors from the popular theatre of the Edo period. His work is recognised for its refined line quality and the psychological depth he brought to his subjects, moving away from the more stylised, generic portrayals common in earlier prints.
The composition features the actor holding a lantern aloft, his body angled to suggest movement and tension. The figure is dressed in a kimono adorned with crane motifs, a detail that adds visual interest to the garment. Behind him, a stylised floral arrangement provides a sense of setting without overwhelming the primary subject. The print employs a limited, controlled palette, typical of the period, which allows the focus to remain on the actor's expressive facial features and posture.
Bunchō often collaborated with other artists, such as Katsukawa Shunshō, to produce works that captured the specific mannerisms and individual characteristics of famous performers. This print is an example of the hosoban format, a narrow vertical size frequently used for single-figure actor portraits. The clean lines and balanced composition reflect the aesthetic standards of the mid-Edo period, where the art of the printmaker was closely tied to the celebrity culture of the kabuki stage. By isolating the actor against a neutral background, the artist directs the viewer's attention to the theatricality of the moment, capturing a fleeting gesture that would have been familiar to contemporary audiences.
