A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō, featuring the kabuki actor Ichikawa Komazō in a traditional theatrical pose.
This woodblock print by Ippitsusai Bunchō depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Komazō in a characteristic pose. Bunchō was active during the mid-Edo period and is recognised for his contributions to the yakusha-e genre, which focuses on portraits of kabuki actors. The print captures the actor with a stylised, elongated posture, a hallmark of the artist's approach to human form. He holds a thin stem, perhaps a floral accessory, while standing near elements that suggest a Shinto setting, including a shrine structure and decorative chrysanthemums.
The composition employs a muted colour palette, typical of the nishiki-e prints of the era. The actor wears a kimono adorned with a repeating circular pattern, which contrasts with the geometric grid of the obi. The lines are precise and calligraphic, defining the actor's features and the folds of his garments with economy. The inclusion of the chrysanthemums adds a seasonal element to the scene, often used in kabuki to signal specific times of year or thematic associations within a play.
Bunchō often collaborated with other artists, such as Katsukawa Shunshō, to produce works that captured the specific likenesses of performers. This print reflects the aesthetic priorities of the time, where the focus remained on the actor's stage persona rather than a realistic portrait. The flat composition and the use of negative space allow the figure to occupy the frame with clarity. The print serves as a record of the theatrical culture of 18th-century Edo, documenting the appearance and style of popular performers who were the celebrities of their day. The work demonstrates the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour is applied via a separate woodblock to achieve the final image.
