Description

A striking 1794 woodblock portrait by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the actor Arashi Ryuzō in a moment of intense theatrical expression.

This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Arashi Ryuzō in the role of the money lender Ishibe Kinkichi. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to the genre of ōkubi-e, or large-head portraits, which focus on the facial expressions and psychological state of the performer. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised portrayals common in the ukiyo-e tradition. Instead, he employs a style of caricature that emphasises the specific, often unflattering, features of the actor.

In this print, the subject is shown with a distinctive, heavy jawline and a grimacing expression. The eyes are wide, with the pupils directed upwards, conveying a sense of suspicion or agitation appropriate for the character of a miserly money lender. The composition is stark, set against a mica-dusted background that provides a metallic, reflective quality. The actor wears a patterned kimono, rendered with a grid-like design that contrasts with the smooth, pale skin of the face. The lines are precise and controlled, capturing the tension in the actor's posture as he clutches his garment.

Sharaku was active for only ten months, during which he produced a series of portraits that challenged the conventions of the Edo period theatre print. His work captures the raw energy of the stage, prioritising the actor's individual personality over decorative beauty. This print is a representative example of his brief but intense period of artistic production, demonstrating his ability to convey complex human emotion through the medium of the woodblock print. The use of colour is restrained, focusing on the orange-red of the kimono and the neutral tones of the background, which directs the viewer's attention to the actor's face.
