A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Chōkyōsai Eiri, depicting a playful, parodic scene from the Yoshiwara pleasure district.
This woodblock print by Chōkyōsai Eiri belongs to a series that reinterprets the traditional Chinese tales of the Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety within the contemporary setting of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The artist employs a parodic approach, replacing the classical figures of virtue with courtesans and their attendants. This subversion of moral narratives was a common practice in late eighteenth-century Edo, where artists often used the framework of historical or Confucian texts to comment on the social dynamics of the floating world.
The composition features two figures in a relaxed, domestic interior. One woman sits upright, adjusting a mosquito net, while the other reclines, holding a small fan. The lines are fluid and precise, characteristic of the bijin-ga style, which focused on the depiction of beautiful women. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted greens and soft earth tones to define the garments and the architectural elements of the room. The use of negative space and the simplified background allow the viewer to focus on the posture and interaction of the subjects.
Chōkyōsai Eiri was active during the late 1790s and is known for his contributions to the development of the bijin-ga genre. His work often reflects the influence of Utamaro, particularly in the elongated proportions of the figures and the focus on intimate, everyday moments. This print serves as an example of how Ukiyo-e artists engaged with literary traditions, adapting them to suit the tastes of the urban merchant class. The print captures a quiet moment of leisure, stripped of the overt moralising tone of the original source material, instead offering a glimpse into the aestheticised lifestyle of the Yoshiwara.
