A classic Yokohama-e woodblock print depicting international visitors and merchants at the Yokohama docks during the mid-nineteenth century.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora captures the cultural intersection occurring in Japan during the Bakumatsu period. As a work of Yokohama-e, it documents the arrival of foreigners in the port city of Yokohama following the opening of Japanese trade routes. The composition presents a series of figures representing different nationalities, including British and French individuals, alongside a Chinese merchant. These figures are depicted with the characteristic stylistic interpretation of Western dress common to Japanese artists of the mid-nineteenth century.
The print functions as a visual record of the curiosity surrounding international visitors. The figures are placed against a backdrop of the harbour, where steamships and sailing vessels are visible. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment that became popular in Japanese prints during this era, defines the sea and sky. The figures are rendered with clear outlines and flat areas of colour, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition. The inclusion of horses and parasols adds to the narrative of daily life at the docks, reflecting the rapid social changes of the time. Yoshitora, a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, was particularly active in producing these prints that satisfied the public demand for information about the outside world. The work provides a window into the Japanese perception of Westerners, their fashion, and their technology during a period of significant national transition.
