A woodblock print from the Yokohama-e genre, depicting a Prussian couple as imagined by Japanese artist Utagawa Yoshitora during the late Edo period.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Yoshitora belongs to the genre known as Yokohama-e, which emerged during the late Edo period. Following the opening of Japanese ports to international trade in the 1850s, artists produced these works to satisfy public curiosity regarding foreigners. The print depicts a couple identified as Prussian, though the representation relies on imaginative interpretation rather than direct observation.
The male figure wears a blue tunic draped with a patterned cloth, while the female figure is dressed in a long, dark coat with a ruffled collar, holding a parasol. Both figures are rendered with exaggerated features and skin tones that reflect the Japanese perception of Westerners at the time. The background features simplified architectural elements, suggesting a European setting, though the perspective remains distinctly Japanese in its execution. The cartouche in the upper left corner provides the title and context, typical of the series documenting people from various nations.
Yoshitora was a student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi and became a prolific designer of these prints. His work captures a specific moment in Japanese history when the isolationist policy of the Tokugawa shogunate began to collapse. The print serves as a visual record of how foreign visitors were perceived and categorised by the Japanese public during this period of rapid social change. The use of colour and line reflects the technical standards of the Utagawa school, employing traditional woodblock techniques to document contemporary events and figures. This print is a representative example of the fascination with the outside world that defined the early years of the Meiji era transition.
