A haunting lithograph from 1882 by French Symbolist Odilon Redon, exploring themes of mortality through dark, atmospheric imagery.
Odilon Redon produced this lithograph as part of his 1882 series titled À Edgar Poe. The work displays the characteristic dark, dreamlike quality of his 'noirs' period, where he utilised the medium of lithography to explore the boundaries between reality and the subconscious. The composition features a skeletal figure, partially obscured by shadow, pulling a rope attached to a large, suspended bell. A mask, rendered with unsettling clarity, floats in the lower centre, its wide eyes directed upward toward the source of the sound. Redon manipulated the lithographic stone to create a range of deep, velvety blacks that contrast with the pale, luminous surface of the mask and the bell. The fine, wispy lines surrounding the bell suggest a spectral atmosphere, while the heavy, textured darkness creates a sense of claustrophobia. By focusing on themes of mortality and the macabre, Redon moved away from the objective representation favoured by his contemporaries. Instead, he prioritised the internal world of the imagination. The ambiguity of the scene, where the mask appears to be both an object and a sentient participant in the tolling of the bell, invites the viewer to interpret the narrative through a psychological lens. This print demonstrates his technical mastery over light and shadow, allowing him to transform a simple monochromatic surface into a space filled with psychological tension and atmospheric depth.
