Titian

1490–1576 · Italian

Titian lived so long he changed Venetian painting twice. He started as Giovanni Bellini's pupil, developed the warm, luminous colour that defined the Venetian High Renaissance, and then in old age abandoned precise drawing entirely, painting with his fingers, rags, and broad smears of paint that would not be understood until Rembrandt and Velazquez came along a century later.

Biography

He was born in Pieve di Cadore in the Dolomites and sent to Venice as a boy. He studied under Bellini, worked alongside Giorgione (who died young, leaving several paintings that Titian may have finished), and by his thirties was the most sought-after painter in Europe. Charles V, Philip II of Spain, Pope Paul III, and the Venetian Republic all competed for his services.

The Assumption of the Virgin (1516-18) in the Frari church in Venice is seven metres tall and uses a red so intense it dominates the entire building. Venus of Urbino (1534), a reclining nude gazing directly at the viewer, was described by Mark Twain as 'the foulest, the vilest, the obscenest picture the world possesses.' Twain went to see it three times.

His late paintings are extraordinary. The Flaying of Marsyas, Diana and Actaeon, and the late Pieta are painted with a freedom that anticipates modern art by four centuries. The surfaces are rough, the colours dark, the figures emerging from shadow as if being formed from paint itself. He was in his eighties or possibly nineties (his birth date is disputed). He died during a plague in Venice in 1576.
