James Holland

James Holland began his career painting flowers on pottery at the Davenport works in Longport. This early training in ceramics gave him a disciplined eye for detail before he moved to London in 1819. He spent his early years in the capital teaching flower painting to private pupils.

Biography

He is best known for his watercolours and oils of Venice and Portugal. He visited Venice in 1835 and returned several times to capture the city. His work features architectural accuracy combined with a sense of atmospheric light. In A Canal, Venice, he focuses on the relationship between the water and the stone facades. His travels to Portugal in 1837 resulted in works like Landschap bij Sintra, where he recorded the specific topography and local architecture of the region.

Collectors today value Holland for his ability to document nineteenth-century Europe with clarity. His views of London Bridge and Devon provide a factual record of historical sites. These prints offer a window into a past era without the sentimentality common in Victorian art. The clean lines and clear compositions make his work suitable for contemporary interiors.
