Biography

He was born in Naples in 1722, the son of a Genoese merchant family, and trained under Francesco Solimena. He worked in Naples, Rome and Parma. He had no formal pupils, but his compressed domestic scenes influenced contemporaries like Giuseppe Bonito and Lorenzo de Caro. He died around 1770.

  1. 1722Baptised on 15 February in the church of Santa Maria dell'Incoronatella in Naples, the son of a Genoese merchant living in the city.
  2. 1740Trained under Francesco Solimena in Naples at approximately 18, alongside fellow pupils Giuseppe Bonito and Francesco de Mura.
  3. 1752Spent increasing time in Rome from 30 onwards, painting a series of six canvases for the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in which he reinterpreted biblical subjects as scenes from everyday life.
  4. 1760Active between Rome and Naples at about 38, producing satirical genre paintings of animated bourgeois groups in a Caravaggist style. He has been compared to Hogarth and Jan Steen.
  5. 1770Died on 1 November at the age of 48. Although he had no pupils, his influence can be traced in the work of Lorenzo de Caro and Giuseppe Bonito.
