Ben Spider

1970–present · French

Ben Spider arrived at screen printing relatively late: he had spent more than two decades working as a graphic designer and communications professional before setting up a printing studio in 2015. Born in Zurich in 1970[1], he grew up on the French[1] Riviera and moved to Paris in 1980, where he studied visual arts at the Sorbonne under Michel Journiac. His first exhibition came in 1993, at the Sorbonne and the Donguy gallery, but a career in commercial design intervened for twenty years before he returned to art practice.

Biography

The two decades in advertising are not incidental to his work. Spider uses halftone printing as both a technical method and a conceptual proposition: the mechanised dot patterns of commercial reproduction applied to images pulled from news channels and search engines. His Pop Icons series gathers portraits of political figures and consumer goods, processed until they become cool and affectless, the emotional temperature of a supermarket shelf. He has described the series as capturing a world where celebrity, politics, and commodity have become interchangeable.

He co-founded the derPunkt movement, a loose collective advocating a global, anti-fascist visual politics. His ongoing RoadTrip series documents travel imagery processed through the same halftone and screenshot methodology. From 2020 he accelerated his output and refined a digital workflow that moves between media without abandoning the print aesthetic. His work explores image perception and propaganda in a media landscape where originality and reproduction have become difficult to distinguish.
