Barrington Watson

1931–2016 · Jamaica

Barrington Watson spent three years at three institutions on three continents before returning to Jamaica[1] to build an art infrastructure his country barely had. Born in Lucea, Hanover Parish on 9 January 1931[1], he had been a promising footballer for Kingston College before switching to painting at age 20. He trained at the Royal College of Art in London, the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, and the combination of rigorous European technical schooling with a determination to paint Caribbean life on its own terms defined everything that followed.

Biography

His paintings belong to Social Realism: figures observed with directness, subjects drawn from everyday Jamaican life. Works such as Washer Woman, Mother and Child, and The Maroon Dance place ordinary Caribbean people at the centre of the canvas without condescension. They are precise and technically confident, the observation specific enough to resist the generalising impulse that plagued so much postcolonial figurative painting of the same era.

Watson co-founded the Contemporary Jamaican Artists' Association in 1964[1] and was appointed the first Director of Studies at the Jamaica[1] School of Art, where he shaped generations of Jamaican painters and sculptors. He won the prize at the first Spanish Biennale in Barcelona in 1967, received the Gold Musgrave Medal from the Institute of Jamaica in 2000, and was appointed Commander of the Order of Distinction. He later served as visiting professor at Spelman College in Atlanta. He died on 26 January 2016[1], at the age of 85. His sons Basil and Raymond Watson both became sculptors.
