A minimalist woodcut print by Dutch artist Julie de Graag, featuring the clean silhouette of a swimming duck.
Julie de Graag was a Dutch artist associated with the Hague School and the later developments of Art Nouveau. Her work often features simplified, stark forms that reflect a mastery of the woodcut medium. This print, titled Zwemmende eend, demonstrates her ability to reduce a natural subject to its essential silhouette. By using a high-contrast palette, de Graag creates a clear distinction between the subject and the background. The duck is rendered with minimal detail, yet the posture and the subtle lines indicating water movement convey a sense of calm motion.
De Graag studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, where she developed a distinct graphic language. Her prints frequently focus on animals, plants, and rural life, often stripped of unnecessary ornamentation. This approach aligns with the broader European interest in graphic clarity during the early twentieth century. The composition is contained within a simple rectangular border, a common device in her work that frames the subject and focuses the viewer's attention on the interplay of positive and negative space. The lack of complex shading or texture allows the viewer to appreciate the precision of the carving and the deliberate nature of each mark. This piece is a representative example of her graphic output, which remains admired for its economy of form and technical discipline.
