A fine mezzotint by Dutch artist Dirk Maas, depicting a rider on a rearing horse with the tonal depth characteristic of the period.

This mezzotint by the Dutch artist Dirk Maas captures a rider mounted upon a rearing horse. Maas, active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, gained recognition for his technical skill in depicting horses and military subjects. The medium of mezzotint allows for a wide range of tonal values, which the artist employs here to create soft transitions between light and shadow across the animal's musculature and the rider's attire. The composition follows the traditions of equestrian portraiture, where the control of the animal serves as a metaphor for discipline and authority. The rider, dressed in period-appropriate clothing including a plumed hat, holds the reins firmly as the horse rises on its hind legs. The background remains secondary, providing a suggestion of an outdoor setting without distracting from the primary subjects. The texture of the horse's coat and the folds of the rider's coat demonstrate the artist's attention to detail, a hallmark of his work in printmaking. Maas spent time in England, where he produced various works for the court of William III. His prints were often sought after for their accuracy in anatomical representation. This specific work reflects the interest in equestrian subjects that permeated European art during this period. The print conveys a sense of controlled energy, typical of the baroque influence on Dutch art. By utilising the mezzotint process, Maas achieves a velvety depth that defines the form of the horse against the atmospheric background. This piece offers a glimpse into the technical capabilities of printmakers of the era, who used light and shadow to construct volume and presence on a two-dimensional surface.
