This print by Pieter Schenk (I) reflects the European fascination with East Asian aesthetics during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Known as Chinoiserie, this style involved the interpretation of Chinese and Japanese motifs through a Western lens. Schenk, a prolific Dutch engraver and mapmaker, produced this work as part of a broader interest in exotic subjects that permeated the Dutch Republic at the time.
The composition features a figure resting within a pavilion, a common trope in depictions of Eastern life designed for European audiences. The scene is framed by an octagonal border, which mimics the shape of decorative panels or fans popular in interior design during the period.
