A Dutch Impressionist study of a woman resting in a field with a red parasol, capturing the quiet atmosphere of a summer afternoon.
Frits Jansen, a Dutch painter active during the late nineteenth century, captures a quiet moment of leisure in this work. The title, Zomernamiddag, translates to Summer Afternoon, a theme frequently explored by artists of the period who sought to document the relaxed habits of the bourgeoisie. The composition centres on a young woman reclining in a grassy field, her posture suggesting a pause in her reading. Beside her lies an open book, providing a narrative element to the scene.
The artist employs a palette dominated by various shades of green, which represent the sun-drenched grass and the foliage in the background. The brushwork is loose and expressive, characteristic of the Impressionist influence that permeated European art at the time. This technique allows the light to appear as if it is filtering through the trees, creating a soft, dappled effect across the subject and the ground.
A notable element of the painting is the bright red parasol held by the woman. This choice of colour provides a sharp contrast to the surrounding greenery, drawing the eye immediately to the figure. The woman wears a light, ochre-coloured dress, which harmonises with the natural tones of the setting. Her expression is calm and contemplative, reflecting the stillness of the afternoon. Jansen demonstrates a keen eye for the interplay between light and shadow, using these elements to define the form of the figure without relying on rigid outlines. The work offers a glimpse into the social customs of the era, where time spent outdoors in nature was a common pursuit for the middle classes. The painting remains a representative example of Dutch Impressionism, focusing on the observation of everyday life and the atmospheric qualities of the natural world.
