A detailed academic figure study in black chalk, created by Jan Kamphuijsen in 1788 as a prize-winning exercise in anatomical precision.
This academic figure study by Jan Kamphuijsen, dated 1788, represents the rigorous training typical of late eighteenth-century Dutch art academies. The work, titled 'Zittend mannelijk naakt, van voren gezien', was awarded a third prize, a common practice for students demonstrating proficiency in anatomy and draughtsmanship. The inscription 'Tertium Praemium' confirms its status as a competition piece.
The drawing employs black chalk to model the musculature of the seated male figure. Kamphuijsen uses precise hatching to define the contours of the torso and limbs, creating a sense of volume against the plain background. The figure is posed in a manner that allows the artist to display his understanding of human anatomy, with particular attention paid to the tension in the thighs and the structure of the shoulders. The subject looks directly toward the viewer, adding a psychological presence to what is otherwise a technical exercise in form.
Such drawings were essential components of an artist's education. By copying the human form from life, students learned to translate three-dimensional subjects onto a two-dimensional surface using light and shadow. This specific work reflects the Neoclassical preference for clarity, balance, and anatomical accuracy. The composition is contained and stable, focusing entirely on the physical properties of the model. The artist's signature is visible in the lower left, while the Latin inscription in the upper right provides the context of the academic award. This print offers a clear view of the draughtsmanship techniques favoured during the period, making it a suitable choice for those interested in the history of art education and the development of classical figure drawing.
