A precise 1794 academic figure study in red chalk by Chrétien Dubois, depicting a seated male nude in profile.
This academic figure study, executed in red chalk, captures a seated male nude in profile. The work dates to 1794 and earned the artist, Chrétien Dubois, a first prize for his technical proficiency in anatomical rendering. The drawing follows the rigorous standards of late eighteenth-century art education, where students were expected to demonstrate mastery of form, musculature, and light through the medium of sanguine.
The figure is positioned on a simple block, providing a stable base for the composition. Dubois employs hatching and cross-hatching techniques to model the torso, limbs, and facial features. The light source originates from the upper left, casting soft shadows that define the contours of the back and the musculature of the legs. The artist pays particular attention to the tension in the hand resting upon the calf, a detail that adds a sense of physical presence to the pose.
In the upper right corner, the artist has included a formal inscription, noting the award received for the piece. This inclusion of text is characteristic of competition drawings from the period, which were often preserved as evidence of a student's progress within an academy. The use of red chalk, or sanguine, was a preferred choice for such studies due to its ability to mimic the warmth of human skin and its versatility in creating both fine lines and broad, soft tonal transitions. This print reproduces the original drawing with high fidelity, maintaining the texture of the paper and the specific tonal qualities of the red chalk. It serves as a clear example of the disciplined approach to life drawing that defined the training of artists in the late eighteenth century.
