This work by Lu Peng depicts the Neo-Confucian philosopher Zhou Dunyi in a moment of quiet contemplation. The subject is a traditional motif in Chinese art, referencing the philosopher's well-known essay, 'On the Love of the Lotus', in which he identifies the flower as a symbol of purity and integrity. Lu Peng employs the conventions of the literati tradition, using controlled ink washes and delicate brushwork to define the figure and the surrounding natural elements.
The composition is balanced, with the seated figure of Zhou Dunyi positioned on a rock formation to the left, balanced by the gnarled, textured trunk of a tree on the right. The artist uses a restrained palette, allowing the subtle variations in ink tone to convey depth and atmosphere. The lotus flowers, rendered with light, suggestive strokes, emerge from the lower section of the frame, providing a visual anchor for the philosopher's gaze. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left corner follows the classical practice of integrating text and image, providing context and poetic resonance to the scene.
