A traditional ink and colour painting by Luo Ping, depicting the mythological demon-queller Zhong Kui being assisted by a group of ghosts.
Luo Ping, a member of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, produced this work depicting the legendary demon-queller Zhong Kui. In this composition, the typically formidable figure of Zhong Kui appears in a state of vulnerability, supported by a group of ghosts. The artist employs a restrained palette, relying on ink wash and subtle colour tints to define the figures and the surrounding environment.
The brushwork demonstrates the characteristic fluidity associated with the Yangzhou school. Luo Ping uses calligraphic lines to delineate the robes and the expressive features of the subjects. The tree and bamboo elements are rendered with economy, providing a sense of space without cluttering the scene. The composition balances the central group of figures against the verticality of the tree, creating a narrative focus on the interaction between the mythological protagonist and his spectral companions.
Luo Ping was known for his interest in the supernatural, often incorporating ghost imagery into his oeuvre. This piece reflects his ability to humanise mythological characters, presenting them with a degree of pathos rather than mere caricature. The paper surface retains a neutral tone, allowing the ink variations to provide the necessary depth and texture. The work includes traditional seals and inscriptions, which are typical of the period and the artist's practice of integrating text with visual imagery. This print captures the nuanced ink application and the specific characterisation that defined Luo Ping's contribution to Qing dynasty art.
