A nineteenth-century Dutch educational print by Johan Noman, featuring fifteen hand-coloured vignettes of ancient wonders and scientific inventions.
This educational print by the Dutch artist and engraver Johan Noman presents a grid of fifteen distinct vignettes. Each panel depicts either a wonder of the ancient world or a significant technological advancement. The composition follows a structured, didactic format common in early nineteenth-century Dutch pedagogical materials. The top row features architectural marvels such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, and the Colossus of Rhodes, while subsequent rows transition into scientific and mechanical subjects, including the printing press, the microscope, and various maritime tools.
Noman employs a clear, linear style typical of the period, using thin etched lines to define the figures and structures. The hand-applied colour is restrained, focusing on primary tones that assist in distinguishing the various elements within the crowded grid. Each image is accompanied by Dutch text, which provides a brief explanation of the subject matter, reflecting the era's interest in encyclopaedic knowledge and the dissemination of information to a broader public. The print was published by the firm Erven H. Rijnders in Amsterdam, a house known for producing popular prints and broadsides for the urban market.
The work functions as a visual catalogue of human achievement. By placing ancient monuments alongside modern inventions like the thermometer and the telescope, the print creates a narrative of progress. The figures are rendered with simple, expressive gestures, and the architectural forms are simplified to ensure legibility within the small scale of each panel. This piece offers a glimpse into the educational priorities of the Dutch middle class during the early nineteenth century, where historical literacy and scientific curiosity were highly valued. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with its original purpose as a mass-produced item intended for study or display in a domestic setting.
