A traditional ink painting by Kenkō Shōkei depicting the legendary meeting between the poet Bai Juyi and the monk Niaoke Daolin.
This ink painting by the Japanese monk-painter Kenkō Shōkei depicts a legendary meeting between the Tang dynasty poet Bai Juyi and the Chan Buddhist monk Niaoke Daolin. The composition adheres to the conventions of Muromachi period ink painting, where the economy of line and the use of negative space communicate the philosophical weight of the subject matter.
Kenkō Shōkei, a disciple of the painter Geiami, was active at Kenchō-ji in Kamakura. His work reflects the influence of Chinese Song and Yuan dynasty models, which were highly regarded by the Zen monastic community in Japan. In this scene, the contrast between the two figures is clear. Niaoke Daolin sits perched in a pine tree, his posture relaxed and grounded in his spiritual practice. Bai Juyi, dressed in the formal robes of a government official, sits on the ground below. The interaction captures the moment when the poet asks the monk about the essence of Buddhism, to which the monk replies with a simple, direct observation about the nature of good and evil.
The brushwork is characteristic of the period, employing varied ink tones to suggest texture and form without the need for colour. The gnarled pine tree serves as a structural element, framing the figures and providing a sense of depth within the shallow pictorial space. The artist uses calligraphic strokes to define the robes and the weathered features of the monk, while the background remains sparse to focus the viewer on the dialogue between the two men. This piece is a fine example of the narrative ink painting tradition, where historical and religious anecdotes were translated into visual form to aid in meditation and moral instruction. The work demonstrates the technical precision and spiritual focus associated with the Zen aesthetic of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries.
