A sixteenth-century Dutch engraving depicting the spiritual union of the soul with Christ, designed by Maarten van Heemskerck and executed by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert.
This engraving by Dirck Volckertsz. Coornhert, after a design by Maarten van Heemskerck, depicts a theological allegory concerning the union of the soul with Christ. The composition features two central figures: a seated, semi-nude Christ and a smaller, kneeling male figure representing the human soul. The physical interaction between the two, with Christ embracing the figure, illustrates the concept of spiritual oneness. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and muscular definition characteristic of the Northern Mannerist style, reflecting the influence of Italian Renaissance masters on Dutch printmakers of the sixteenth century.
Coornhert was a significant figure in the Dutch intellectual sphere, known as much for his humanist writings as for his work as an engraver. His technical approach to the copper plate is precise, using varied hatching and cross-hatching to model the anatomy and suggest the ethereal cloud-like setting. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Quae in coniunctio ducit ad aeternam foelicitatem' (This union leads to eternal happiness), clarifies the didactic intent of the image. The work serves as a clear example of how print culture in the Low Countries functioned to disseminate complex theological and philosophical ideas to a wider audience. The print demonstrates the collaborative nature of the period, where a designer like Heemskerck provided the composition and an engraver like Coornhert executed the final plate. The attention to anatomical detail and the dramatic, swirling drapery are hallmarks of the period's aesthetic, which prioritised expressive form over strict naturalism.
