A refined Persian miniature depicting a youth reading beneath a blossoming tree, executed in the distinctive style of the Safavid court.
This miniature painting, attributed to the Safavid master Sultan Muhammad, depicts a solitary figure seated beneath a blossoming tree. The subject is engaged with a book, a common motif in Persian courtly art that signifies intellectual refinement and poetic contemplation. The composition is structured around the vertical axis of the tree, which provides a natural frame for the reader.
The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the period, where the focus remains on the decorative quality of the surface rather than three-dimensional depth. The figure wears a vibrant turquoise robe, contrasting with the warm, golden-toned background. The tree, rendered with delicate, rhythmic brushwork, is laden with white blossoms, suggesting the arrival of spring. The ground is dotted with small, stylised plants, a hallmark of the Tabriz school of illumination.
Sultan Muhammad was active in the royal workshops of the Safavid court, where he produced works for manuscripts such as the Shahnameh. His style is characterised by a high degree of technical precision and a sophisticated use of colour. The fine lines used to delineate the facial features and the folds of the clothing demonstrate the meticulous nature of this tradition. This piece reflects the aesthetic values of the sixteenth-century Persian elite, who prized the synthesis of literature and visual art. The use of gold leaf in the background adds a luminous quality to the work, elevating the scene from a simple observation to a stylised, idealised representation of courtly life. The balance between the organic forms of the tree and the geometric precision of the figure creates a harmonious visual experience.
