A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu, depicting a woman reading a poem strip tied to a cherry tree.
This woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu depicts a young woman engaged in the seasonal custom of reading a tanzaku, a narrow strip of paper used for writing poetry, which is suspended from the branches of a flowering cherry tree. The composition is characteristic of the mid-eighteenth-century Ukiyo-e style, prioritising elegant, elongated figures and a refined use of line. Toyonobu was a master of the benizuri-e technique, which utilised a limited palette of colours, often including soft pinks and greens, applied to the monochrome base.
The figure is dressed in a kimono featuring a variety of geometric patterns, including checks and floral motifs, which demonstrate the artist's attention to textile design. Her posture is graceful, with her arms raised to reach the poem strip, creating a sense of gentle movement. The cherry tree, rendered with delicate lines, frames the subject and provides a seasonal context associated with spring and the fleeting nature of beauty. The background remains largely unadorned, allowing the focus to remain on the figure and her interaction with the poem.
Ishikawa Toyonobu was a prominent figure in the development of the bijin-ga genre, which focused on the depiction of beautiful women. His work often features these tall, slender figures, a stylistic choice that influenced many of his contemporaries. The print reflects the cultural practices of the Edo period, where the appreciation of nature and literature was integrated into daily life. The use of negative space and the balance between the patterned garments and the sparse background are hallmarks of his approach to printmaking. This piece offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the time, where simplicity and precision were highly regarded in the production of woodblock prints.
