A delicate study in coloured chalks by Dutch artist Cornelis Dusart, capturing a quiet, introspective portrait of a young woman.
This study by Cornelis Dusart captures a quiet, introspective moment. The artist, a pupil of Adriaen van Ostade, was known for his depictions of everyday life in the Netherlands during the late seventeenth century. His work often focused on the character of common people, moving away from the idealised forms found in earlier classical traditions.
The drawing employs a technique using coloured chalks, which allows for soft transitions across the subject's face. The woman is depicted with her gaze lowered, suggesting a state of concentration or repose. Her hair is pulled back, revealing the structure of her features, while the loose folds of her garment are rendered with simple, effective strokes. The palette is restrained, relying on the natural tones of the paper and the warmth of the red chalk to define the contours of her skin and clothing.
Dusart's signature, visible on the left side of the composition, confirms his authorship. This piece is characteristic of his smaller, more intimate works on paper, which were often produced as independent studies rather than preparatory sketches for larger paintings. The focus remains entirely on the individual, presented without the distraction of a complex background or narrative setting. The artist manages to convey a sense of presence through minimal means, relying on the texture of the chalk and the subtle shading of the face to create a convincing likeness. This print captures the tactile quality of the original medium, preserving the delicate layering of the chalk and the aged appearance of the paper surface. It offers a glimpse into the observational practices of a Dutch artist working at the turn of the eighteenth century.
