A portrait by Berthe Morisot, 'Young Woman Leaning on Her Elbows' captures a moment of quiet contemplation with loose brushwork and delicate tones, showcasing the artist's Impressionistic style.
Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was a French painter and a member of the circle of painters in Paris who became known as the Impressionists. She was described by Gustave Geffroy in 1894 as one of "les trois grandes dames" of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Mary Cassatt. Morisot was an important figure in the movement, exhibiting in all but one of the Impressionist exhibitions. In this oil on canvas, a young woman is depicted in a moment of quiet contemplation. She is seated, leaning on her elbows, with her hands supporting her face. The background is a wash of blue, providing a soft contrast to the figure. Morisot's brushwork is loose and fluid, capturing the fleeting effects of light and atmosphere. The colour palette is restrained, with delicate tones of blue, white, and flesh. The overall effect is one of intimacy and introspection, inviting the viewer to share in the woman's private thoughts.
