A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi, depicting a woman in contemporary dress alongside a ceremonial cap from his series on the Six Immortal Poets.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi belongs to the series titled The Six Immortal Poets in Elegant Modern Dress. Eishi, a former painter for the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to printmaking during the late eighteenth century. He is recognised for his depictions of slender, graceful figures, a departure from the more robust proportions favoured by his contemporaries.
The composition features a woman in a kneeling posture, her gaze directed upwards. She is positioned beside a stand holding a ceremonial cap, which serves as a visual reference to the classical poets of the Heian period. Eishi reinterprets these historical figures through the lens of contemporary Edo fashion. The subject wears a kimono decorated with subtle patterns, rendered with the refined line work characteristic of the artist. The colour palette remains muted, relying on soft earth tones and delicate washes to define the forms.
The inclusion of calligraphic text in the upper left corner provides context, linking the visual imagery to the literary tradition of the Six Immortal Poets. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance negative space with decorative elements, such as the patterned textile beneath the figure. This work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the period, where classical themes were frequently adapted for a popular audience. The print is an example of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the representation of beautiful women. Eishi's approach to the human form, marked by elongated limbs and elegant gestures, distinguishes his contribution to the ukiyo-e tradition.
