A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu, depicting the actor Murata Heiemon with a sword and umbrella.
This woodblock print by Ishikawa Toyonobu depicts the actor Murata Heiemon in a character role. The figure stands in a vertical composition, characteristic of the hosoban format favoured for actor portraits during the mid-Edo period. The subject wears a patterned outer garment, adorned with stylised floral motifs, which contrasts with the linear structure of the umbrella he holds. The umbrella is positioned downwards, creating a sense of movement and preparation for the elements.
Toyonobu was a master of the benizuri-e technique, though this particular work relies on precise line work and subtle tonal variations. The artist captures the actor with a refined elegance, focusing on the posture and the specific details of the costume. The sword tucked into the sash signifies the character's status, while the actor's expression remains composed. The background is kept minimal, allowing the viewer to focus on the silhouette and the decorative elements of the clothing.
As a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e school, Toyonobu contributed to the development of actor portraiture, often referred to as yakusha-e. His work is noted for its graceful lines and the balanced arrangement of figures within the narrow frame. This print provides a view into the aesthetic preferences of the 18th-century Japanese theatre scene, where the visual presentation of actors was as important as their performance. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in woodblock carving, where every line contributes to the overall form of the figure. The use of space and the placement of the calligraphy add to the balance of the composition, typical of the period's artistic output.
