A detailed monochromatic study by Alexandre Bida, depicting a quiet, intimate conversation between a young man and a priest in a traditional setting.
Alexandre Bida was a French draughtsman and painter known for his detailed observations of life in the Near East. During his travels in the 1840s and 1850s, he produced a large body of work documenting the customs, dress, and daily interactions of the people he encountered. This piece captures a quiet, private moment between two figures: a young man dressed in traditional Greek attire and an older, bearded priest.
The composition is balanced, with the two men seated side by side on a wooden bench. The young man leans in, his posture suggesting an earnest or confidential tone. Opposite him, the priest holds a nargileh (water pipe) in one hand and a string of prayer beads in the other. The inclusion of these objects, alongside the small coffee service on the low stool, provides a sense of domestic reality. Bida employs a monochromatic palette, using subtle gradations of wash to define the folds of the priest's robes and the texture of the young man's fustanella. The background is kept simple, with wood panelling that anchors the figures within the space without distracting from their interaction.
Bida was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to render ethnographic detail with sensitivity. Unlike some of his contemporaries who focused on dramatic or exoticised scenes, Bida often preferred scenes of calm, everyday life. This work reflects his interest in the human element of his travels, focusing on the rapport between individuals rather than grand narratives. The print captures the soft, tonal qualities of the original drawing, preserving the delicate handling of light and shadow that characterises Bida's work on paper.
