A striking portrait by Moïse Kisling, featuring a woman with expressive eyes and dark hair, rendered in the artist's signature polished style.
Moïse Kisling, a central figure of the School of Paris, is recognised for his distinct approach to portraiture. This work displays his characteristic focus on the subject's facial features, rendered with a smooth, almost porcelain-like finish. The sitter is depicted with large, almond-shaped eyes and a melancholic expression, a recurring motif in Kisling's oeuvre during the interwar period.
The composition is tightly cropped, focusing entirely on the head and shoulders of the woman. Her dark, wavy hair frames her face, creating a stark contrast against the simplified background. Kisling employs a deliberate colour palette: the bright, flat blue on the left balances the deep, dark tones on the right, effectively isolating the figure. The skin tones are painted with subtle gradations, giving the face a sculptural quality that draws the viewer's attention directly to the eyes.
Kisling moved to Paris in 1910 and became associated with the artistic community in Montparnasse. His style synthesised influences from his Polish origins and the modern movements he encountered in France. He often painted his friends, models, and fellow artists, capturing a specific mood rather than a purely realistic likeness. This portrait reflects the artist's ability to combine technical precision with a sense of emotional distance. The application of paint is controlled, avoiding visible brushwork to achieve a polished surface that was highly sought after by his contemporaries. This print captures the clarity and specific tonal balance of the original oil painting, making it a representative example of Kisling's contribution to twentieth-century European portraiture.
