A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu, depicting a theatrical character from the series Famous Scenes from Japanese Puppet Plays.
This woodblock print by Okumura Masanobu depicts a character from the series Famous Scenes from Japanese Puppet Plays (Yamato irotake). The figure is identified as Yoshiwara Benkei, a role rooted in the theatrical traditions of the Edo period. Masanobu was a significant figure in the development of Ukiyo-e, known for his technical innovations in printmaking and his contributions to the depiction of actors and courtesans.
The composition features a central actor in a dynamic, crouched pose, holding a broom. The figure wears a patterned kimono with distinct circular motifs, paired with striped hakama trousers. The artist employs a clean, linear style, typical of the period, with minimal background elements to focus attention on the subject. The use of colour is restrained, relying on subtle tones to define the costume and the actor's features. The print includes the artist's signature and seal, which are characteristic of his work during this phase of his career.
As a practitioner of the Ukiyo-e school, Masanobu helped shape the visual language of the floating world. His work often bridged the gap between the refined aesthetics of the urban elite and the popular culture of the theatre. This particular print captures the essence of a puppet play performance, translating the stylised movements of the stage into a two-dimensional medium. The attention to detail in the costume and the expressive posture of the actor reflect the artist's ability to convey character through simple, deliberate lines. This print offers a glimpse into the cultural life of 18th-century Japan, where the theatre served as a primary source of entertainment and artistic inspiration.
