A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei depicting the historical encounter between Minamoto no Yorimitsu and Watanabe no Tsuna.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shuntei depicts a formal encounter between the Heian-period commander Minamoto no Yorimitsu and his loyal retainer, Watanabe no Tsuna. Shuntei, a pupil of Katsukawa Shun'ei, was known for his focus on warrior subjects, or musha-e. The composition is structured around the interior of a Japanese residence, where the figures are arranged in a deliberate, static manner that reflects the social hierarchy of the period.
Minamoto no Yorimitsu sits centrally, his posture conveying authority. Watanabe no Tsuna is positioned to the lower right, accompanied by other attendants. The artist employs a flattened perspective, typical of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the architectural elements serve as a frame for the narrative action. The inclusion of armour pieces on the floor suggests a recent return from duty or a preparation for a campaign, adding a layer of martial context to the scene.
Textual elements, including calligraphy, are integrated into the upper left quadrant, a common feature in prints of this era that provided context or poetic commentary on the depicted historical event. The colour palette is muted, relying on subtle washes of blue, ochre, and ink-black, which have softened over time. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the Katsukawa school's approach to figure drawing. This work offers a glimpse into the popularisation of historical and legendary narratives in Edo-period Japan, where the exploits of famous warriors were frequently adapted for a broad audience through the medium of the woodblock print.
