Yokkaichi: Nako Bay and the Mie River - Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print is the forty-fourth entry in the series Famous Sights of the Fifty-three Stations, often referred to as the Vertical Tokaido. Produced in 1855, this work demonstrates the mastery of composition and colour application that defined the later period of Utagawa Hiroshige. The scene depicts the post station of Yokkaichi, situated along the coastal route connecting Edo to Kyoto.

Hiroshige employs a vertical format to organise the visual information into distinct planes. In the foreground, a curved bridge spans a small waterway, providing a structural anchor for the viewer. Figures traverse the path, their small scale emphasising the breadth of the surrounding environment. The middle ground features traditional thatched-roof buildings, rendered with clean lines and subtle colour washes. Beyond these structures, the composition opens into the expansive Nako Bay. The horizon line is defined by a deep blue band, suggesting the transition from the river to the sea, while the distant masts of ships indicate the maritime activity of the region.

The print utilises the bokashi technique, a method of woodblock printing that creates subtle gradations of colour. This is particularly evident in the sky and the water, where the ink fades from a saturated tone to a lighter hue. The inclusion of a flock of birds in the upper section adds a sense of movement and atmospheric depth to the scene. The overall balance of the print reflects the artist's ability to capture the quiet character of the Japanese countryside during the Edo period. This piece remains a primary example of the aesthetic priorities of the Ukiyo-e school, focusing on the observation of travel and the specific geography of the Tokaido road.
