A 1973 screenprint by Jack Bush, featuring bold, gestural shapes in orange, blue, and red against a textured grey background.
Yellow Mark is a screenprint by the Canadian artist Jack Bush, produced in 1973. Bush was a member of the Painters Eleven group, a collective that introduced abstract art to the Canadian public during the 1950s. His later work, including this piece, reflects his engagement with the Colour Field movement and his interest in the interaction of pure colour forms.
The composition features a large, gestural orange shape that dominates the centre of the frame. Below this primary form, two smaller, parallel strokes in blue and red provide a sharp chromatic contrast. These elements are set against a textured, muted grey background, which appears to have been applied with a brush, creating a sense of depth and tactile quality. The contrast between the flat, saturated hues of the foreground shapes and the uneven, atmospheric grey field is a hallmark of Bush's mature style.
Bush often utilised a process of simplification, stripping away representational elements to focus on the emotional and optical impact of colour. In this work, the arrangement of shapes suggests movement and spontaneity, despite the technical precision required for the screenprinting process. The work avoids complex narrative, instead inviting the viewer to engage directly with the physical presence of the ink on the paper. The deliberate placement of the orange form against the neutral ground creates a tension that is characteristic of his later prints. This piece represents the artist's ability to balance controlled composition with a sense of immediate, painterly energy.
