Pavel Filonov, a central figure in the Russian avant-garde, developed a unique methodology he termed Analytical Art. This work, Yard Keepers (Dvorniki), demonstrates his early engagement with Cubist principles, where the subject matter is fractured into a series of geometric planes. The composition centres on two figures seated at a table, separated by a large samovar. The space is not rendered through traditional perspective, but rather through the accumulation of small, discrete units of form.

Filonov applied his theory of the organic growth of a painting to this piece. He believed that an artist should build a work from the smallest detail outward, much like a living organism. The lines are precise and deliberate, creating a sense of tension between the figures and their environment. The checkerboard patterns and angular shapes suggest the urban reality of early twentieth-century Russia, where the domestic sphere is constantly interrupted by the geometry of the modern world. The samovar, a traditional object of Russian hospitality, becomes a structural anchor within this fragmented scene.

Unlike the more decorative approaches of his contemporaries, Filonov focused on the internal logic of the image.
