A 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicting the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshiro IV in the role of Otoma.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Iwai Hanshiro IV in the role of Otoma, the daughter of Ohina. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a series of actor portraits that defined the artist's brief but intense career. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised features common in contemporary ukiyo-e, opting instead for a style that emphasises the specific, often exaggerated, physical traits of the performers.
The composition focuses on the head and shoulders of the actor. The figure is set against a plain, mica-dusted background, a technique that draws attention to the subject's expression and costume. The actor's face is rendered with bold, clean lines, capturing a sense of theatrical presence. The kimono features a striped pattern, rendered with precision, which provides a visual contrast to the smooth, pale skin of the face. The hair is styled in the elaborate fashion of the period, adorned with decorative combs.
Sharaku's approach to portraiture remains distinct within the history of Japanese printmaking. By focusing on the psychological intensity of the actor rather than a generic beauty, he created images that feel immediate and confrontational. This print is an example of his ability to distil the essence of a stage performance into a two-dimensional format. The use of colour is restrained, relying on the interplay of the striped fabric and the neutral background to maintain focus on the actor's features. This print provides a clear view of the aesthetic priorities of the Edo period theatre culture, where the actor's identity and the character's persona were inextricably linked.
