A detailed maritime study by Dutch master Willem van de Velde the Elder, capturing a yacht firing a salute in ink and wash.
This drawing by Willem van de Velde the Elder captures a maritime scene with characteristic precision. Van de Velde, a master of marine draughtsmanship, spent his career documenting the Dutch fleet and naval engagements. His work often served as preparatory material for larger oil paintings, yet these sketches possess a directness that reveals his technical command of ink and wash.
The composition focuses on a central yacht, rendered with economical, calligraphic lines that define the rigging and hull. The artist employs a light grey wash to suggest the atmospheric effects of smoke from a salute, a common motif in his naval studies. Small rowing boats populate the foreground, providing a sense of scale against the larger vessel. The horizon remains sparse, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the ships and the water.
Van de Velde the Elder was known for his ability to record naval architecture with accuracy. He frequently accompanied the Dutch fleet to observe manoeuvres at sea, often working from a small boat to gain the best vantage point. This drawing reflects that observational rigour. The paper shows signs of age, with subtle foxing that adds to the historical character of the piece. The use of brown ink, typical of the period, has softened over time, creating a harmonious tonal balance. This print offers an opportunity to observe the draftsmanship of a specialist who shaped the visual record of seventeenth-century maritime history.
