An atmospheric etching by George Taylor Plowman depicting the iconic Woolworth Building in New York City, rendered with delicate line work.
George Taylor Plowman was a significant figure in the American Etching Revival, a movement that sought to elevate the status of the print as a fine art medium. This etching captures the Woolworth Building in New York City, which was completed in 1913 and held the title of the world's tallest building for seventeen years. Plowman, who studied under the master etcher Sir Frank Brangwyn in London, brought a refined technical sensibility to his depictions of urban architecture.
The composition employs a vertical orientation that emphasises the soaring height of the skyscraper. Plowman uses selective focus, concentrating his line work on the upper reaches of the tower while allowing the lower street level to dissolve into a suggestive, atmospheric haze. The foreground is framed by dark, gestural marks that represent the surrounding urban structures, creating a sense of looking up from the busy streets of Lower Manhattan. His approach to the copper plate is economical, relying on the contrast between the white of the paper and the dark, bitten lines of the ink to define the Gothic-inspired ornamentation of the building's facade.
This work reflects the fascination with the rapid transformation of the American city during the early twentieth century. Rather than providing a rigid architectural rendering, Plowman captures the impression of the building as a monumental presence within the skyline. The print demonstrates his command of the etching needle, showing how varied pressure and line density can convey both the solidity of stone and the ephemeral quality of light. By focusing on the verticality of the structure, the artist invites the viewer to experience the scale of the Woolworth Building as it appeared to a pedestrian in the early years of its existence.
