Auguste Herbin (1882-1960) was a French painter known for his contributions to Cubism and later, abstract art. Although he experimented with various styles throughout his career, this landscape reflects an earlier, more representational phase, before his complete embrace of abstraction. Herbin's artistic journey began with Post-Impressionism, gradually evolving towards geometric abstraction. He was a founding member of the group Abstraction-Création in 1931, advocating for non-figurative art. His later work explored the relationship between colours and forms, developing a unique visual language. 'Wooded Coast at Roche Goyon' depicts a coastal scene with a grassy slope leading down to the sea. The composition is divided into distinct zones of colour and texture. The upper portion of the canvas shows a rocky cliff covered with trees, rendered in shades of green and brown. The middle ground features a grassy area, while the lower portion depicts the sea with dark blue and white brushstrokes. The sky is rendered with soft pink and blue hues, suggesting a cloudy day.
