A study of olive harvesters in Saint-Rémy, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, featuring his signature rhythmic brushwork and earthy palette.
Painted in December 1889 during his stay in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, this work captures the seasonal labour of olive harvesting. Van Gogh produced a series of canvases depicting olive groves, a subject that occupied his attention throughout his final year. The composition features three figures positioned amongst the gnarled, rhythmic trunks of the trees. One figure stands upon a ladder, reaching into the foliage, while the others assist from the ground. The application of paint is characteristic of the artist's later period, utilising short, directional brushstrokes that follow the contours of the branches and the uneven terrain. The palette is dominated by muted greens, earthy browns, and a pale, atmospheric sky that suggests the cool light of a winter day in the south of France. The trees themselves are rendered with a sense of movement, their twisted forms echoing the physical exertion of the workers. Van Gogh often sought to represent the connection between the peasant and the land. In this instance, the figures are integrated into the grove, their forms simplified to harmonise with the surrounding vegetation. The work avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the rhythmic repetition of the olive branches and the overall mood of the scene. This piece reflects his interest in the cycle of agricultural life, a theme he explored frequently while living in the asylum at Saint-Rémy. The painting remains a clear example of his ability to transform a mundane rural task into a study of colour and form, where the landscape and the human presence exist in a state of visual equilibrium.
