Albert Gleizes, a central figure in the development of Cubism, produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with geometric form and spatial fragmentation. In this composition, the subject is deconstructed into a series of overlapping planes and angular facets. The artist rejects traditional perspective, opting instead to present multiple viewpoints simultaneously. This approach forces the viewer to reconstruct the figure of the woman and the surrounding animal forms from the rhythmic arrangement of shapes.

The palette consists of earthy tones, including ochre, deep brown, and muted red, punctuated by sharper contrasts of light and shadow. These colours serve to define the structural boundaries of the planes rather than to describe naturalistic light. The geometric rigour of the work reflects the analytical phase of Cubism, where the objective is to represent the essence of the subject through a systematic breakdown of its physical volume.

Gleizes was not only a practitioner but also a theorist of the movement, co-authoring 'Du Cubisme' with Jean Metzinger in 1912.
