A delicate study by Henryk Siemiradzki featuring a classical female figure and a putto, rendered in graphite and watercolour.
Henryk Siemiradzki, a prominent figure in the late nineteenth-century Academic tradition, frequently turned to classical antiquity for his subject matter. This study, rendered in graphite and watercolour, captures a quiet, allegorical moment between a female figure and a putto, or amor. The composition reflects the artist's training in the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and his subsequent time in Rome, where he absorbed the influence of the Italian Renaissance and the neoclassical revival.
The woman, draped in classical attire, sits with her back to the viewer, her posture suggesting a gentle interaction with the small, winged figure beside her. Siemiradzki employs a restrained palette, relying on sepia tones and muted washes to define the forms. The background is suggested through light, cross-hatched graphite marks, which provide a sense of space without distracting from the primary figures. A basket containing arrows sits nearby, a clear iconographic reference to Cupid and the themes of love and mythology that permeated the artist's larger oil paintings.
Siemiradzki was known for his technical precision and his ability to balance historical accuracy with a romanticised view of the ancient world. This work functions as a preparatory sketch or a finished study, demonstrating his command of anatomy and drapery. The soft application of watercolour over the graphite underdrawing creates a sense of volume and texture, particularly in the folds of the woman's garment. By focusing on the intimate connection between the figures, the artist moves away from the grand, theatrical scale of his monumental canvases, offering instead a glimpse into his process and his fascination with classical motifs. The work remains a fine example of the draughtsmanship that defined his career, showing a clear understanding of light and shadow to model the human form.
