A classic nishiki-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, capturing a woman rushing across a bridge during a sudden rainstorm.
Suzuki Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single woodblock composition. This work depicts a woman caught in a sudden downpour, her posture leaning forward against the wind as she holds a yellow paper umbrella. The rain is represented by stark, diagonal black lines that cut across the upper portion of the frame, creating a sense of immediate movement and atmospheric tension.
Harunobu often focused on the grace and fragility of his subjects, and this print is no exception. The woman is shown in a moment of hurried transit, her kimono caught in the breeze, revealing the layered fabrics beneath. The bridge setting provides a simple, geometric background that contrasts with the organic, sweeping lines of the rain and the woman's form. The inclusion of the thunder drums in the upper right corner adds a mythological or symbolic layer to the scene, suggesting the presence of Raijin, the god of thunder, in the dark clouds above.
The composition relies on a balance between the static elements of the bridge and the kinetic energy of the storm. Harunobu uses a muted palette, allowing the yellow of the umbrella and the orange accents of the kimono to draw the eye. This print demonstrates the technical precision of the Edo period printmakers, who achieved subtle gradations of colour and line weight through the careful carving and registration of multiple woodblocks. It is a classic example of the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women in everyday or poetic situations, captured with a sense of fleeting time.
