A striking portrait by Kees van Dongen, 'Woman on Sofa' captures the elegance of early 20th-century Parisian life with bold colours and stylised features. The reclining figure exudes an air of languid sophistication.
Kees van Dongen, born in the Netherlands, became a prominent figure in the Fauvist movement in France. His expressive use of colour and simplified forms captured the spirit of early 20th-century Parisian life. Van Dongen's portraits often depicted fashionable women, actresses, and socialites, characterised by bold colours and a somewhat satirical edge. He moved to Paris in 1897 and began exhibiting his work at the Salon d'Automne, becoming associated with artists such as Henri Matisse and André Derain. His style evolved over time, but he remained committed to capturing the essence of his subjects with a distinctive flair. 'Woman on Sofa' exemplifies van Dongen's signature style. The reclining figure, draped in a silvery dress and fur stole, exudes an air of languid elegance. The artist's use of colour is striking, with the cool tones of the dress contrasting against the warm browns of the fur and the muted greens of the sofa. The woman's elongated neck and stylised features are typical of van Dongen's portraits, which often exaggerated certain characteristics to create a sense of drama and intrigue. The composition is simple yet effective, drawing the viewer's eye to the subject's face and the overall mood of relaxed sophistication.
