A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei, featuring a woman in a kimono with a distinct red spider web pattern.
This woodblock print by Katsukawa Shun'ei depicts a woman in a striking kimono adorned with a red spider web pattern. Shun'ei, a pupil of Katsukawa Shunsho, was known for his contributions to the Ukiyo-e genre, particularly his work in yakusha-e (actor prints) and bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). The composition is characteristic of the late eighteenth-century Edo period, where the focus remains on the elegant posture of the subject and the graphic quality of the textile design.
The figure stands against a simplified architectural background, which directs the viewer's attention to the kimono. The spider web motif, rendered in a repeating geometric style, contrasts with the soft, flowing lines of the woman's hair and the drape of her garment. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the interplay between the warm yellow of the kimono and the deep red of the pattern. The artist employs a clean, calligraphic line to define the contours of the figure, a hallmark of the Katsukawa school's approach to printmaking.
Shun'ei's work often captured the fashion and aesthetic sensibilities of the urban population in Edo. This print functions as a study of contemporary style, documenting the specific patterns and silhouettes popular during the period. The lack of excessive background detail allows the print to function as a graphic exploration of form and repetition. The artist's signature is visible on the lower right, confirming his authorship within the established conventions of the time. This piece offers a clear example of the technical precision achieved by Ukiyo-e artists in the production of single-sheet prints for a broad audience.
