A refined pastel portrait by Jean-Étienne Liotard, capturing a woman in traditional Ottoman dress with characteristic precision and soft, luminous colour.
Jean-Étienne Liotard, a Swiss painter known for his meticulous approach to portraiture, created this work during his period of fascination with the Levant. Liotard spent several years in Constantinople, where he adopted local customs and dress, a choice that earned him the nickname 'the Turkish painter'. This pastel on vellum captures a woman in traditional Ottoman attire, seated in a relaxed, contemplative pose upon a sofa.
The composition is defined by its clarity and the soft, luminous quality characteristic of Liotard's pastel technique. The subject wears a white gown adorned with small, delicate floral motifs, cinched at the waist with a broad sash and silver clasps. Her posture, with her head resting on her hand, suggests a moment of quiet introspection. Beside her, a bright blue cushion provides a sharp chromatic contrast to the neutral tones of the background and the white fabric of her dress. A small basket containing personal items and a book rests nearby, adding a sense of domestic intimacy to the scene.
Liotard's attention to texture is evident in the rendering of the fabrics and the woven pattern of the carpet beneath the sofa. The carpet, featuring bold red and blue geometric motifs, anchors the composition and provides a sense of depth. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured idealised forms, Liotard maintained a commitment to observational accuracy. This work reflects his interest in the exoticism of the East, filtered through his precise, disciplined style. The absence of complex shadows or dramatic lighting allows the viewer to focus on the subject's expression and the fine details of her costume. It remains a representative example of his ability to combine ethnographic interest with the refined aesthetic sensibilities of the eighteenth century.
