Chaïm Soutine, born in 1893 in a small Lithuanian village, was a painter whose turbulent life mirrored the intensity of his canvases. Escaping poverty and prejudice, he arrived in Paris in 1913, where he plunged into the bohemian world of Montparnasse. Though associated with the Expressionist movement, Soutine remained fiercely independent, developing a unique style characterised by distorted forms, vibrant colours, and a palpable sense of raw emotion. Soutine's paintings are instantly recognisable for their thick impasto and almost violent brushstrokes. He found inspiration in still lifes, portraits, and landscapes, imbuing each with his distinctive vision. His series of carcasses, inspired by Rembrandt's "Slaughtered Ox," are particularly striking, transforming the macabre subject into a study of colour and texture. While his work wasn't always understood during his lifetime, fellow artists like Amedeo Modigliani recognised his genius, and he was supported by influential collectors. Despite gaining recognition, Soutine remained a tormented figure, plagued by self-doubt and anxiety. He died prematurely in 1943, while fleeing Nazi-occupied Paris. Today, Chaïm Soutine is celebrated as a major figure in 20th-century art. His emotionally charged paintings continue to captivate viewers, and his unique expressionist vision ensures his place among the masters.
