A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicting a woman observing the Chrysanthemum Festival, rendered in the elegant bijin-ga style.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi belongs to the series Elegant Pictures of the Five Seasonal Festivals. Eishi, a former painter for the Tokugawa shogunate, transitioned to printmaking in the late eighteenth century. His work is known for elongated figures and a refined aesthetic that departed from the more robust styles of his contemporaries.
The composition depicts a woman in a seated position, holding a wooden cup stand. The inclusion of chrysanthemums links the scene to the Chōyō no Sekku, or the Chrysanthemum Festival, which is one of the five traditional seasonal festivals in Japan. The floral motifs appear on the stand itself and in a decorative container placed to the right of the figure. Eishi employs a muted colour palette, relying on soft browns, oranges, and greens to convey a sense of quiet formality.
The figure wears a layered kimono with a patterned under-garment and a plain outer robe. Her posture is balanced, and her expression is neutral. The lines are precise and controlled, characteristic of the artist's approach to the bijin-ga genre, which focuses on the depiction of beautiful women. The print reflects the cultural practices of the Edo period, where seasonal observances were integrated into daily life and artistic expression. The cartouche in the upper left corner provides the series title, while the artist's signature and seal are located in the lower left. This work provides a view into the aesthetic preferences of the urban elite during the late eighteenth century, prioritising grace and subtle ornamentation over dramatic action.
